It is used to combine or rewrite sentences denoting a result.
Eg: Mahesh is very tall. So he can touch the ceiling.
Here from the above sentences, we can understand the fact that, it is Mahesh’s tallness that makes himself able to touch the ceiling. That is, his ability to touch the ceiling is the result of his tallness. Thus the above sentences can be either rewritten or combined with so…that, as shown below,
Mahesh is so tall that he can touch the ceiling.
Another example….,
Ques. The tea was served too hot. I could not drink it fast.
Ans. The tea was served so hot that I could not drink it fast.
Now let’s study how to rewrite or combine this type of sentences with So…that, as follows:-
- Replace the words very, too, with so , which are found before the adjectives / adverbs in the sentence telling a fact.
In the above two examples, Mahesh is very tall and The tea was served too hot are the sentences that tell the facts, and the adjectives / adverbs found in the sentences are tall and hot respectively.
Before the adjective tall, we can see the word very and before the adverb hot, we can see the word too. So the words very and too are to be replaced with so, as follows,
Mahesh is so tall….
The tea was served so hot…..
{ It is to be noted that sometimes, the words very, too etc. may not be written before the adjectives or adverbs. In such cases also so is to be written before that adjectives or adverbs.}
- Then, write the sentence showing the result, after writing the conjunction that before its subject.
While writing that, the conjunctions like hence, so etc. should be avoided, if they are seen in the sentence, as shown below,
that he can touch the ceiling.
Here, the conjunction so is avoided.
that I could not drink it fast.
Here, as there is no conjunction like so or hence, the sentence is written as seen in the question.
More examples…
- Jacob worked hard. Thus he got first rank in the exam.
( The adverb hard is written, and also the words very, too are not seen here.)
Jacob worked so hard that he got first rank in the exam. ( So is written before the adverb)
- Mathew is very So he can quickly understand your tricks.
Mathew is so intelligent that he can quickly understand your tricks.
(Here the word very in the first part and the conjunction so in the second part are avoided)
So, we have studied how to combine or rewrite sentences using So…that
